The UK has the highest proportion of gay men engaging in Chemsex in Europe, and Manchester has been identified as one of the fastest growing Chemsex scenes in the country.
‘Jock Night’, a play written and directed by Adam Zane (Queer As Folk) aims to raise awareness about Chemsex, its dangers, and the need for support within the LGBTQ+ community.
The play, which stars former Hollyoaks actor and LGBTQ+ activist David Paisley, runs until 31st May at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester. It follows a group of guys who become involved in the Chemsex scene in Manchester. Adam Zane told Manchester Evening News, “The play explores some of the reasons why people might choose to get involved in Chemsex, but I didn’t want it to be another gay play where people die and it’s just pure trauma and misery.”
‘Jock Night’ explores themes of friendship, community, connection, belonging, and the relationships formed at clubs, bars and Chemsex parties – and aims to be relatable to a wide audience beyond the LGBTQ+ community, offering a nuanced view of Chemsex, showing both its potential consequences and the possibility of safe engagement.
It’s refreshing – and groundbreaking – to see the subject tackled with such openness and honesty. We highly recommend grabbing a ticket before the run ends on 31st May.
